Russian Pastry: Homemade Pies with Meat and Cabbage

It is always a pleasure to make traditional Russian dishes for dinner, especially if it is pies with cabbage and meat

Not only does the odour of this wonderful dish awaken the appetite but it also symbolises the comforts of home. Of course, there are plenty of options for making these pies. Just about every Russian family has its own recipe that has been passed down from generation to generation, and we are ready to share one of ours with you.

Homemade Pies with Meat and Cabbage

Ingredients
milk1 cup
egg1
Dr. Oetker dry yeast12 grams
butter50 grams
sugar1 tablespoon
wheat flour 3 cups
pork400 grams
cabbage400 grams
sunflower oil3 tablespoons
onion1
saltto taste
freshly ground black pepper to taste

Warm the milk over low heat until it’s room temperature

Dissolve the yeast in the milk

Melt the butter over low heat

Mix the egg with the salt and sugar in a large bowl

Add the milk with yeast into the egg mixture and mix thoroughly

Add flour while constantly stirring

Add melted butter and mix again

Keep stirring the mixture with your hands, adding flour as needed so the dough doesn't stick to your hands

Put the dough in an oiled container, cover it with saran wrap and leave it in a warm place for an hour

Chop the pork into medium-sized pieces, boil them in a small amount of water and add the whole onion (peel it in advance)

Stew the cabbage with the vegetable oil, salt and pepper

Mix the pork and cabbage, and add the spices to taste

Form equal-sized circles of dough and put the stuffing in the centre of each, and then close them up

Heat the oven to 200 degrees Celsius, put baking paper on a baking sheet and oil it

Put the pies on the baking sheet and sprinkle some beaten egg on top

Place the pies in the oven and cook them until golden brown
