“Today we’ve signed an agreement on developing industrial cooperation in military engineering,” said Denis Manturov, Russia’s minister of industry and trade, at the 13th international weapons show IDEX-2017. “This gives us the opportunity to streamline the fifth-generation light fighter jet, a process in which the UAE will participate.”
“Joint efforts on the development of the fifth-generation light fighter jet are in the initial phase,” said Yuri Slyusar, head of the United Aircraft Corporation, or UAC. “We are currently working on proposals for the UAE.”
The official said that Russia would be represented by the UAC as its head organisation. Sukhoi will also contribute to research on the fighter jet and MiG will share its developments in single-engine technology.
In turn, Sergey Chemezov, head of Rostech, announced that the jet would be designed based on the MiG-29. “We expect to begin work on this jet next year and it will take us around seven to eight years,” the Rostech head said.
