American journalist Ashlee Vance, author of the biography “Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX, and the Quest for a Fantastic Future,” shot a film about the Russian Internet called “Inside Russia’s Creepy, Innovative Internet,” which was posted on Bloomberg’s website.
Vance visited Skolkovo and Group-IB, travelled to Akademgorodok near Novosibirsk, interviewed Mail.Ru Group’s co-founder Dmitry Grishin and spoke with the developers of the facial recognition app FindFace. “Russian engineers are clever, eager and ready to make their mark on the world,” Vance says in the film. “They’re also operating in a climate where the government meddles in their affairs and sometimes takes control of their companies.”
However, according to Vance, “nobody cares to speak much about this in the open.”
