In the film, the dictator travels to a castle, located somewhere in the woods, to rest for three days. He takes his mistress Lydia with him. Stalin finds a couch in one of the rooms there that resembles the one that Sigmund Freud had in London, and suggests to Lydia that they play psychoanalysis sessions in the evenings.

At the same time, a young artist seeks to meet with the dictator in order to show him a monument that he created in his honor.

Lydia is played by Emmanuelle Seigner, who is known for the films "La Vie en Rose," "Bitter Moon," "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly" and "Venus in Fur."

The premiere of “Le Divan de Staline” in France took place on Jan. 11, 2017.
