Around 6.9 million tourists visited St. Petersburg last year, which is 400,000 more than in 2015, according to the city’s tourism development committee.

The number of foreign tourists who visited Russia’s northern capital fell from 2.9 million to 2.8 million.

The drop can be attributed to a decrease in the number of direct international flights to St. Petersburg. Therefore, the overall increase in tourist flow was primarily achieved by Russian citizens.

Since the beginning of winter, the number of tourists in St. Petersburg has increased by one third in comparison to the same period last year. At the same time, the number of visitors at the city’s main museums has grown by 25-30%.
