The press service of the Federal Road Agency, or Rosavtodor, said that Russia might have a go at testing solar panel roads, M24 reported.

“The Federal Road Agency has commissioned a research and development project titled ‘Development of Methodological Recommendations to Equip Roads with Alternative Sources of Electric Energy and Heat,’” Rosavtodor reported. “During this project, we will consider solar panel road construction.”

Rosavtodor noted that the solar panel coating would be particularly useful in areas with the highest number of sunny days per year.

“However, the European experience shows that the construction of such roads involves a number of technical difficulties, so this issue requires a deep study,” Rosavtodor’s press service cautioned.

On Dec. 22, 2016, a portion of the world’s first solar panel road opened in the French village of Tourouvre-au-Perche.
