French luxury brand Moynat will use so-called “Russian leather” in its 2017 collection, ProFashion reported.

The distinct type of leather was produced exclusively in the Russian Empire and is renowned both for its durability and a unique scent that melds smoke with incense and myrrh.

“The special tanning process employed was a jealously guarded secret,” a Moynat representative said. “The material was widely used in Russia for everything from army gear and travel accessories to leather goods, and it became popular in Western Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries.” The representative added that Russian leather had disappeared at the beginning of the 20th century due to the Russian Revolution of 1917.

However, French tanners have managed to rediscover the original formula. Moynat will unveil their collection of “Russian leather” products in 2017.
