Art. Lebedev Studio has launched the “Kolor” web instrument which uses a neural network to colourise black and white photos, Afisha.Daily reported Monday.

“The neural network analyses each pixel of the image and determines its colour based on several algorithms,” developers describe a working process of the service.

Once the colours are selected, the network adjusts saturation and contrast levels of the picture. The processing of one photo takes about two minutes. According to some users, Kolor is based on the principles similar to ones used in the Algorithmia tool developed earlier by ColorizeIt.

Art. Lebedev Studio is a Russian design firm founded in 1995 by Artemy Lebedev. The studio creates industrial and graphic design for commercial entities. In 2013, the studio won a public vote for the best redesign of the Moscow Metro map.
