Toyota has started production of the RAV4 model at its plant in St. Petersburg, with investments towards this project reaching 9,7 billion rubles ($150.1 million), according to a statement released by the company.
The RAV4 is the second model to be produced in St. Petersburg, following the Camry, which has been manufactured there since 2007. Russian-made Toyota RAV4 models will be sold in Russia, Kazakhstan and Belarus.
The enterprise is currently hiring a new staff. The production volume will gradually increase – as a result, around 800 new jobs will be created over the next few months.
The decision to expand production at the St. Petersburg factory was made in 2013 after careful analysis found a growing demand for the Toyota RAV4, a company spokesman noted.
Matsunaga Yoshinori, Executive Director at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Russia, highlighted: “This project demonstrates the confidence in the work of our employees and the recognition of their efforts. Our employees’ work is based on the fundamental principles and philosophy of Toyota at each production stage. Thorough preparation for the second model launch was carried out over the past three years, and today we are pleased to announce the beginning of a new phase in the life of our plant, as well as to offer a Toyota RAV4 of very high quality to our customers”.
