Fire Ladders: As well as missile systems, the Makeev State Rocket Center manufactures a range of civilian products. Its tower ladder, for example, is the ultimate device to fight fires and save lives, and it can work at heights of up to 50 meters.
Tram Cars: Founded in 1758, the Ust-Katav Railcar Building Plant, a subsidiary of Roscosmos’ Khrunichev Research and Production Space Centre, is one of the oldest enterprises in Russia and a producer of state-of-the-art trams that will soon be speeding along the streets of many cities across Russia.
Nuclear Power Plant: The VNIIEM Corporation develops control systems for nuclear power plants. In the Soviet era, the company designed electronic equipment for the nuclear power plants in Leningrad, Kursk and Chernobyl. VNIIEM is currently working on electrical controls and protection systems for water-moderated reactors. Some of these systems have been supplied to international nuclear plants, including Bushehr in Iran.
Cartography: Although nearly every smartphone has a GPS system installed, very few of us think about where those maps come from and why they are so precise. To achieve the required level of accuracy, Roscosmos spacecraft have performed continuous remote sensing and monitoring of the Earth surface for many years.
The Korvit: The Korvit, a rehabilitation device built with the support of Roscosmos, simulates ground force reaction, or GFR, which is the physical impact on human feet while walking. Apart from astronauts, the GFR stimulation method used in the Korvit can benefit many patients. It is used as part of the rehabilitation programme for patients with cerebral palsy as it helps improve their coordination and restores the balance between flexor and extensor muscles.
Forest Fire Control: Satellite-based monitoring by Roscosmos also helps prevent and estimate damage from natural disasters such as floods and forest fires. Up-to-date satellite images are crucial if a forest fire happens in a remote area, as they show the scale of the fire and the direction in which the fire is spreading.
Training Systems: If you were wondering how space technologies could be used in sports, look at your gym. Initially, most workout machines were invented for astronaut training. Now both spacemen and ordinary earthlings use them.
The VNIIEM Corporation: The VNIIEM Corporation was established within Roscosmos in 1941 to develop and produce electrical equipment used during the defense of Moscow in the World War II. The corporation quickly grew into one of the main research and development enterprises of the Soviet Union and subsequently the Russian Federation.
Swords of Victory: The Zlatoust Machine-Building Plant, also part of Roscosmos, manufactures space exploration equipment and advanced weapons. It also created the Swords of Victory, which symbolise the courage and military glory of Russian cities during the World War II.
Innovative technologies are often developed for the space industry or related fields. Over time, however, some of these inventions are given a second life, and some have become an essential part of our daily routine here on earth. Lenta.ru put together a gallery of some of the products designed by Roscosmos that are improving our lives.
