The Soviet Union Through the Eyes of an American Photographer

Thomas Hammond (1920-1993), a professor at the University of Virginia, an expert on Russian and Soviet history and a photography enthusiast, frequently visited the USSR, where he did research at Moscow State University and spoke with the local people. His photographs showing life in the Soviet Union appeared in many of his lectures and articles, including “A First Look at the Soviet Union” (1959) and “An American in Moscow” (1966) in National Geographic Magazine.
