Russia overwhelmed the competition and came out on top at the Third Winter Military World Games in Sochi, Lenta.Ru reported. The next such international competition for military athletes will be hosted by Germany in 2021.

“We didn’t have a particular medal plan,” said Oleg Botsman, head of the Physical Training and Sport Directorate of the Russian Armed Forces. “What we did have was the objective to perform as well as possible, and this plan came to life.”

The Russian team won 22 gold, nine silver and 11 bronze medals. Italy finished second with eight gold, six silver and six bronze medals. France was third with six gold, 12 silver and five bronze medals. A total of 44 sets of medals were given to teams and individual athletes competing in seven disciplines: biathlon, alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, ski mountaineering, ski orienteering, indoor bouldering and short track speed skating.
