An IL-76 EMERCOM plane has been sent to extinguish wildfires near the town of Portezuelo in Chile, according to the press service of the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations.
EMERCOM pilots will be fighting fires that are threatening Portezuelo and its several thousand residents.
The main task of the EMERCOM aircraft is to protect the town and to isolate the fire.
A state of emergency due to wildfires has been declared in six regions of Chile and the Ministry of Emergency Situations sent an IL-76 to Chile at their request. The IL-76 is able to spray more than 42 tonnes of water onto wildfires while in flight.
